The Chocolate Club
Are all calories the same? We say no! Our calories come from fat from our cocoa butter. We believe calories from sugar are far more of an issue. Fat makes you satiated quickly, feeds your brain and thus you do not ‘crave’ more, whereas sugar makes you want to eat more and more, which is why there is such a big push to reduce sugar intake. We use a specially chosen blend of sweeteners for their benefits (see below).
HOW MUCH SUGAR IS THERE IN NORMAL CHOCOLATE?
There is as much as 55g of sugar in some brands of chocolate. This equates to 11 teaspoons of sugar!! Shocking we know. The daily allowance of sugar is just 6 – 9 teaspoons, so one bar of chocolate can be nearly double your daily allowance. By comparison, there is less than 1 teaspoon of sugar in every bar of Pure Heavenly except the Fruit & Nut which has just 2 teaspoons. The good news is that because our chocolate is low in sugar and high in fat you are satiated far more quickly and therefore only need a small amount to feel satisfied.
BUT AREN’T THE FATS IN COCOA BUTTER JUST AS BAD?
The fat in chocolate comes from cocoa butter and is made up of equal amounts of oleic acid (a heart-healthy monounsaturated fat also found in olive oil), stearic and palmitic acids. Stearic and palmitic acids are forms of saturated fat. You may know that saturated fats are linked to increases in LDL cholesterol and the risk of heart disease.
But, research shows that stearic acid appears to have a neutral effect on cholesterol, neither raising nor lowering it. Although palmitic acid does affect cholesterol levels, it only makes up one-third of the fat calories in chocolate.
However – the obesity epidemic only started when low fat diets became all the rage. We recommend you watch the movie “Fat Fiction” on Amazon Prime – it will open your eyes to the complete disaster that thinking removing fat from diets is the healthy option. Fat is very filling so you don’t need much to satisfy a craving whereas sugar is totally addictive. Think about the last time you were able to eat just ONE biscuit!!
OUR SUGAR ALTERNATIVES
The most common misconception is that sugar is ‘natural’ and therefore better for you. It is not! it is highly processed and extremely damaging to health. Sugar has been associated with increased risks of cancer, obesity, tooth decay, depression, exhaustion, dementia, diabetes, heart disease, and that’s just to name just a few. Our recipe contains a mix of sugar alternatives from mostly natural sources: inulin (chicory root), and erythritol (from fruits and vegetables) and both make up the majority of our sweeteners. Inulin is a dietary fibre that was featured so positively on the BBC’s How To Stay Young, and BBC’s Trust Me – I am a Doctor.
Erythritol has been featured in many positive studies that indicate that it could inhibit the bacteria responsible for tooth decay. It also does not raise blood sugar. We use a tiny amount of Sucralose in our bars to give them a sugar like taste but is only 0.2% of the recipe.
The fibre in Inulin also helps offset the response from the carbohydrates in the rice cream.
